When a U.S. hire can make sense
A local employee may fit work that depends heavily on in-person access, highly localized institutional knowledge, or responsibilities deliberately kept inside a domestic employment structure.
Outland.Work Insights · Finance hiring
The best location for finance support depends on the work itself: required U.S. workday overlap, systems, controls, language needs, management model, and total cost. Compare the tradeoffs without assuming one geography is universally better.
Start with the operating model
Bookkeeping support, accounts payable, reconciliations, reporting preparation, and finance administration can often be performed remotely. Tax advice, attest work, audit opinions, and other regulated responsibilities may require specific credentials or jurisdictional authority regardless of where the support team sits.
| Decision factor | U.S. hire | India-based support | LATAM-based support |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. workday overlap | Usually straightforward when the role is local. | Often requires an intentional shift or partial overlap schedule for live U.S. collaboration. | Many LATAM time zones overlap substantially with U.S. business hours; verify each candidate's actual schedule. |
| Cost structure | Salary plus employer overhead, benefits, recruiting, and other employment costs. | Varies widely by provider, employment model, seniority, and service layer. | Varies by engagement model, seniority, and whether you use direct marketplace access or managed support. |
| Live collaboration | Can support same-day questions, reviews, approvals, and close-period coordination. | Can work well with documented handoffs, asynchronous workflows, or intentionally scheduled U.S. overlap. | Can be practical when finance leaders want recurring real-time contact during the U.S. workday. |
| Controls and access | Requires role-based access, approval limits, segregation of duties, and auditability. | The same controls should apply to remote staff and providers; geography does not replace governance. | The same controls should apply to remote staff and providers; geography does not replace governance. |

India has a large remote-services ecosystem and can fit teams comfortable with asynchronous operations, follow-the-sun workflows, provider-led delivery, or intentionally scheduled U.S. overlap. Evaluate the actual person or provider, not a country-level stereotype.
Latin America can be attractive when recurring U.S. workday overlap matters for approvals, exception handling, close support, or direct collaboration with an internal finance lead.
Considering a change?
If your team is evaluating whether to move some finance support from India to Latin America, start with the operational reason rather than assuming the existing team or region is the problem. Reasons to reassess can include a need for more live U.S. overlap, a change in management structure, different language coverage, closer real-time collaboration, or a move from outsourced delivery toward direct talent relationships.
Before switching, document which workflows work today, systems and permissions, close-calendar dependencies, approval owners, service-level expectations, and knowledge that must transfer. A geography change without a clear operating-model change can recreate the same problems somewhere else.
